A Challenge for August

I decided I'd challenge myself to make 50 items for my shop this August. And it's August tomorrow! I also decided I'd go on a diet in August (ugh!!). Hopefully I'll be so busy making things that I don't have time to snack.

I finally managed to order the fabric and snaps I need to finish/make new things. None of them have arrived yet but I still have some things I can get on with tomorrow. I wanted to finish the covers I started, and the pocket nappies I've embroidered. I tried to order a load of bamboo fleece so I could finish off the fitted nappies I started but again nearly everywhere was out of stock. I tried to order 3 metres from one place but they only had 1 metre left in stock. Hopefully I'll find a source and manage to finish them this month. I want to make some more cloth pads and then some wet bags and some of those little hanging strap things you can snap to your pads. Or nappies I suppose. To make 50 items I figured I'd have to make 7 of each type to get 49 and then one extra random thing.

My goal is:

  • 7 pocket nappies
  • 7 all-in-one nappies
  • 7 fitted nappies
  • 7 nappy covers
  • 7 cloth pads
  • 7 wet bags
  • 7 pad strap/hangers

Sewing things assembly style does seem to make it go quicker, but I don't think I'd want to sew more than 7 of something at once because that would be a bit tedious. I think this sounds do-able. Maybe! I doubt the pad hangers would take more than an hour to make altogether, and sewing wet bags is fairly simple. Cloth pads don't take too long to sew either once they're cut out.

I'll update my progress throughout the month. Weekly seems like a good idea I think. Wish me luck!

Darling Diapers

I just got this pattern a few days ago. Wow! It has so much in it. I could hardly decide what to make. I decided on some All in Ones for easy Daddy changes. The first one is made with yellow PUL, a hidden layer of hemp stretch terry and a striped flannel inner. The soaker snaps in and is made from 3 layers of hemp fleece and matching flannel. Here is the side view. its really quite trim. I used blue touchtape for the side tabs because I thought it would look cool. This is the inner. The soaker is overlocked with woolly nylon. I don't usually use woolly nylon, but it was in my machine, and it was a pretty good match. My boy would not let me get a picture! He is trying to get the camera. And yes, I totally dress my boy in a lilac nappy! Was trying to get a modelling shot, but he wasn't co-operating. Its actually a bit smaller than I thought it would be. As I was sewing it I was sure the legs were too big. It didn't seem like the elastic was stretched enough, but it f...

A few more things...

This top is made from Blessed Designs #1002. It is a nursing top. You lift the top layer and there are extended armhole openings in the white layer. Very good for keeping your stomach covered! It was so fast and easy to make! I will definitely make this again, but next time lengthen it by quite a bit. It's too short on me. Because I am small it makes me look even shorter! I think if I wear a longer top it'll make my body look longer and I'll look taller. The pink fabric came from my stash. I've had it about 4 years. It's not really my colour though. I just really wanted to try the pattern out. The hems were done on my sewing machine. I was too lazy to set my overlocker up to do cover stitch. I think they look pretty good and quite professional. Picture is a bit blurred though. One morning a few months ago I woke up and just randomly decided to sew this! I neglected my house for the day to sew it. It had just been waiting for snaps. It's f...

Sewing related injury!

Was just merrily sewing some wipes on the overlocker when there was a big bang. A needle exploded, scattering tiny sharp bits everywhere! Got stabbed in the boob!!!!!! Well, at least it wasn't my eye. I have cloth wipes now :-) LOTS of them! As soon as I have fished all the pieces of needle out of the machine and replaced it I can finish sewing the rest of them. I think I've done about 35 so far. I'm hoping to stop buying disposable products in an effort to be more eco-friendly. I won't need to buy disposable baby wipes any more. I had stopped buying kitchen roll, but M just bought some. To clean the windows he said. But I think flannel fabric will do a better job. I might make some "un-paper towels" for using in the kitchen. And I think i might make a small stack of cloth napkins for the children to use at the table. Not fancy cloth napkins like you'd get at a restaurant. Probably just some flannel squares to wipe their hands on. I'm also working on a...
